The Americas SBDC State Star awards is a recognition of exemplary SBDC employees who makes a significant contribution to the State SBDC program and shows a strong commitment to small business. See announcement by the Virginia SBDC here.

There is no small impact when it comes to the work and efforts of Timm Johnson, Director of Mason SBDC. A trusted financial expert and business mentor, he has been helping technology and service growth companies of all sizes, in various capacities, for over 30 years.

Timm began as Senior Business Counselor with the Mason SBDC in 2009, helping over 1200 clients before he became Director in 2017. He continues to counsel clients and presents workshops in addition to executing his duties as Director. Since taking office as Director, his diligent efforts and dedication to lifelong learning has helped fellow mentors in the State network and his home SBDC.

Thanks to Timm’s collaboration with local partners, Mason SBDC expanded its presence in Northern Virginia, adding 3 new centers in 2019 and one more in 2023. This has given access to no-cost business counseling services to a wider section across the DC Metro. The Mason SBDC, headquartered in Old Town Fairfax, opened its downtown Manassas location in Jan 2019. During that year, he spearheaded expansion efforts for two more locations which opened in Prince William County (June 2019) and, most recently, in the Town of Herndon in May 2023.

Timm sits on several boards and is a regular invitee by agencies for his financial acumen and expertise on panel discussions and to lead workshops. He conducts business workshops for the U.S. Dept of State – transitioning military members, co-presents with the Virginia APEX Accelerator for the Small Business University Certificate Program organized by Metropolitan Washington Airport Authority and other programs by federal agencies.

Regional Economic Development partners have successfully worked with him on special programs aiming to enhance regional economic development.

During COVID, Timm’s work with other experts in the Virginia SBDC network helped businesses in the state and region with critical financial decisions and processes. He continues to assist and contribute to the entire network regularly.

Timm shares with his Mason SBDC team that he is honored to be nominated and selected for this award. “I feel this award is for all of us – it’s our dedication to lifelong learning and it’s all about the customer who drives all of us and I am proud to be part of this team.”

Congratulations Timm!

This is a well-deserved recognition. We look forward to all that he will continue to accomplish for the state, our program, and the business community!
